“Refined Sugar” is a humorous yet
historical recollection from the first ladies of Sugar Land. The
characters are based on true stories collected by Kristin Lytle and Chuck
Kelly.
The first act is set in the 1930’s
in downtown Sugar Land. Two local women, Edith and Maybel, welcome
newcomer Josephine by giving her a verbal tour of the town. Josephine’s
questions and their humorous descriptions of people and events help paint
a picture of life in a company town.
The setting for act two is of
two women, Gladys, the local switchboard operator, and her friend Odette,
gossiping on the telephone. The conversation includes discussion of some
of the hardships during World War II, such as the difficulty of obtaining
sugar and the need to use prisoners as laborers.
The gossip continues in the 1959
setting in the local beauty shop as Beatrice, a customer reminisces about
her childhood. Eunice and Maria, the hairdresser and her helper,
contribute to the conversation with more recent stories. The comparison
of the past and present leads the women to believe Sugar Land has, indeed,
become more refined.
“Refined Sugar” was performed as
part of the Second Annual Historic Tour presented by Keep Sugar Land
Beautiful. The play was directed by Bruce Kelly and Ryan Kelly. Cast
members were Laura Romero, Jean Oldmixon, Beverly Edmundson and Denise
Garza Mertz.
